Maura Kizito
Operations Director

I am a community healer, nonprofit strategist, and visionary leader committed to advancing food sovereignty, health equity, and economic opportunity. As Operations Director at Wakulima USA, I lead organizational operations, strategic partnerships, and community-centered initiatives that support immigrant, refugee, and underserved communities. Drawing from my lived experience and passion for service, I work to build sustainable programs, strengthen community connections, and create pathways for individuals and families to thrive. I am especially passionate about empowering youth and young adults through leadership development, wellness initiatives, and access to opportunities that foster growth, resilience, and self-determination. I believe that when communities have access to resources, culturally relevant support, and meaningful opportunities, they can transform challenges into lasting growth and resilience. My love for farming and food sovereignty is deeply connected to my commitment to community wellness. As a vegetarian and passionate gardener, I believe access to nutritious and culturally relevant foods is essential to improving physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Through my work, I help create programs and partnerships that strengthen food access, promote wellness, and build healthier communities. Beyond my professional work, I enjoy podcasting, traveling, and experiencing new cultures and adventures. I am passionate about theatre, poetry, photography, and lifelong learning. I believe the world is our shared home, and I am dedicated to creating spaces where people can heal, grow, and thrive while building stronger communities for future generations.

Bernard Nyakiba
Program Supervisor - Connect Pierce County

At Wakulima USA, I serve as the Program Supervisor for the Connect Pierce Community Hub Program powered by Elevate Health. In this role, I help make sure our community members get the support they need through the Connect Pierce Community Hub program. I guide our team of Community-Based Workers, making sure clients are connected to resources and services like food, health care, dental and mental health support. I oversee the coordination and quality of services provided by Community-Based Workers (CBWs), ensuring that clients receive timely, comprehensive, and person-centered care. My work helps ensure clients are actively engaged, supported, and connected to vital resources. Outside of work, I coach youth soccer, creating a safe and fun space for young people to stay active, build confidence, and grow as leaders on and off the field.

OUR VISION

Our vision is to cultivate thriving, self-sustaining communities where immigrants and people of color have equitable access to land, economic opportunity, and culturally grounded wellness. We envision a future where traditional foodways, modern farming practices, and holistic support systems come together to strengthen food sovereignty, promote mental well-being, and empower families to grow, prosper, and lead.
